Forms guide users as they provide information and move through workflows. Precise initial information in headings sets up users for easy form completion.

Keep form headings (sometimes called form names or form titles) short and don't give instructions in the heading.

Use sentence case for all form headings without periods (full stops).

Use strong verbs for form headings and keep them action-oriented.

Match exact verbs and nouns from form headings with button labels whenever possible. When not possible, match form headings with button labels to reflect the goal of the form instead of always using Submit.

    Button label: Create account
  • Form heading: Update settings

  • Form heading: Create account
    Button label: Send
  • Form heading: Update settings
    Button label: Submit

Avoid generic wording for both form headings and their button labels.

  • Form heading: Complete form

Form subheadings​

Use sentence case for all form subheadings. Use periods (full stops) when the subheading is a full sentence.

  • Heading: Report a fault
    Subheading: Include any error codes shown on the machine display.
  • Heading: Upload asset images
    Subheading: JPEG or PNG, max 10 MB each

Only add subheadings when there is additional information that benefits users.

  • Heading: Security verification
    Subheading: We'll send a code to your registered mobile number to confirm it's you.
  • Heading: Schedule maintenance
    Subheading: Choose a time window when the machine can be safely taken offline for up to 2 hours.
  • Heading: Payment details
    Subheading: Enter the card you'd like to use for this order. We accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex.
  • Heading: Security verification
    Subheading: Your security is important to us.
  • Heading: Schedule maintenance
    Subheading: Regular maintenance keeps your equipment running smoothly.
